The club has gone from strength to strength and to date has raised nearly £900,000 for charities across all parts of N Ireland.

The N Ireland Children’s Hospice on O’ Neills Road, Glengormley, is very special to us as we have been supporting them from we started back in 2004. Over £350,000 has been raised for them as well as gardening projects around their site and various other projects.

We also have a Hospice Shop set up in one of our rooms in the Mail Centre which is run by Maureen Magee, one of our volunteers. Maureen works tirelessly at the shop keeping the card stands and shelves up to date with stock.

The Penny Black Club was started by a group of voluntary Postmen and Women  at the Royal Mail Site in Mallusk, Newtownabbey in March 2004.

The Penny Black name for the club was chosen after our famous stamp.  (The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was issued in Britain on 1 May 1840, for official use from 6 May of that year.)

The group were encouraged to start up the club by Royal Mail senior managers based up at Mallusk, and to this day we still have their full support.

Our union, the CWU are also great supporters of the club and in 2010, Billy Hayes the General Secretary, presented the club with a crystal vase for charity work carried out in N Ireland.

In 2008 the Penny Black Club won the NICVA award 1st place for Clubs and Societies in N Ireland. The award was presented to the club by Alan Halsall, best known for playing Tyrone Dobbs in Coronation Street.

In 2005 we bought our own Bouncy castles and character costumes, all of which we insure and maintain ourselves. We use these for our annual Summer and Christmas Staff and Friends fun days. We also use this equipment for Cross Community events and some outside Charity group events. To date we have nine Bouncy Castles and 50 Costumes.

The Club is completely self funding through pool tables etc. within the Mail Centre and donations from members of staff.                                          Unfortunately due to new regulations we no longer stock Bouncy Castles.
